#17 St. Cloud State Defeats Canisius College, 7-0

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #17 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (1-0-0) kicked off its 2007-08 season in top order with a big 7-0 shutout victory over visiting Canisius College (0-1-0) on Friday, Oct. 12, in St. Cloud.

SCSU started its homecoming weekend with a goal by senior forward Matt Hartman (St. Cloud) at 1:46 of the first period. The goal was Hartman's 21st as a Husky, and his third career game winner.

The Huskies gained a 2-0 lead in the game with a goal by freshman forward Garrett Roe (Vienna, Va.) at 7:54 of the first period. His power play tally was assisted by Hartman and freshman Tony Mosey (Prior Lake, Minn.). SCSU completed its first period attack with a goal by senior Aaron Brocklehurst (Nanaimo, B.C.) at 16:09. He was assisted by sophomore forward Ryan Lasch (Forest Lake, Calif.) and senior defender Matt Stephenson (Midland, Ont.).

In the second period, Mosey padded the SCSU lead with his first collegiate goal at 7:34 with the power play assist from Stephenson. Hartman continued the hit parade with a power play goal at 13:21 with assists from Mosey and Roe.

In the third period, Roe notched his third point of the night with an even strength goal at 2:21, as sophomore forward Andreas Nodl (Vienna, Austria) posted the assist. To complete the evening, senior forward Nate Dey (Maplewood, Minn.) charted his 21st career goal at 3:34 of the third with assists from Lasch and rookie forward Aaron Marvin (Warroad, Minn.).

In the game, Hartman, Roe and Mosey all had three points to their credit. The Huskies outshot the Griffins 44-22, as sophomore netminder Jase Weslosky (Edmonton, Alberta) posted his second career shutout with 20 saves. This marked the first time at the DI level that the Huskies have charted a shutout in their season-opener. SCSU is now 8-11-2 in season-opener since moving to the DI level in 1987-88.

 

 

On the power play, SCSU was 3-of-7 and CC was 0-of-6.

The Huskies will continue their season on Oct. 13, with a 7:07 p.m. game against Canisius at the NHC, in St. Cloud. Plenty of tickets are available for this great match-up.
