Colborne Becomes DU's Second First Round Draft Pick

Incoming freshman selected 16th overall by Boston

OTTAWA, Ontario - Incoming recruit Joe Colborne (Calgary, Alberta) become the second player in University of Denver hockey history to be selected in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft tonight at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.

Colborne was selected 16th overall by the Boston Bruins, joining Craig Redmond as the lone Pioneers selected in the first round of the entry draft. Redmond was selected sixth overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 1984.

"We are very happy for the Colborne family on Joe's first round selection," DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We're even more pleased that Joe will further develop his game at the University of Denver this fall."

Colborne capped his stellar junior career by leading the Camrose Kodiaks to their second consecutive Alberta Junior Hockey League championship, Doyle Cup title and a runner-up finish at the Royal Bank Cup. Colborne earned Canadian Junior A Hockey League Player of the Year accolades after leading the AJHL in playoff scoring with 16 points and finishing second overall during the regular season with 90 points. Colborne joins current Pioneers Brian Gifford (Moorhead, Minn./Pittsburgh), Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif./New York Islanders), John Lee (Moorhead, Minn./Florida), Tyler Ruegsegger (Lakewood, Colo./Toronto), Marc Cheverie (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia/Florida), Jesse Martin (Edmonton, Alberta/Atlanta) and Matt Glasser (Calgary, Alberta/Edmonton) as drafted Pioneers.
