SCSU Athletics Receives a Lift From Bret Hedican

Sept. 6, 2007

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University Athletic Department will be adding some more muscle in 2007-08, thanks in part to a donation by National Hockey League veteran Bret Hedican.

A former standout for the Husky men's hockey team from 1988 to 1991, Hedican recently donated five weightlifting machines to the SCSU Athletic Department. The state-of-the-art machines include a leg curl machine, a leg press machine, a 'Smith" machine, a squat rack and a cable cross lat pulldown machine.

The machines will be available for use by all Husky athletes, with three of the machines being used in the Halenbeck Hall weight room and two of the machines being used in the National Hockey Center weight room.

"We appreciate the generous contribution to our program by Bret Hedican," SCSU Diretor of Athletics Dr. Morris Kurtz said. "These machines will be of great benefit to all of our student-athletes. These types of contributions to our athletic program, really help our teams remain competitive in our conferences and at the national level."

Hedican was an All-WCHA performer on defense for the Huskies during his collegiate career. He scored 27 goals and 50 assists at SCSU, and he still owns the team record for most points in a season by a defenseman with 48 in 1990-91.

"I am very proud of St. Cloud State University, and I love still being part of it," Hedican said.

Hedican has enjoyed a solid professional hockey career, which has included stops at St. Louis, Vancouver, Florida and Carolina. In 2006, Hedican and teammate Matt Cullen (another former Husky) helped Carolina win the Stanley Cup.

St. Cloud State will open its 2007-08 men's hockey season on Oct. 12-13, with a home series against Canisius College at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. Game time both nights is slated for 7:07 p.m. For complete ticket information, please call 320-308-2137 or 1-877-SCSUTIX.
