DULUTH, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team will add a new assistant coach to its staff, but she isn't exactly new to coaching.

Laura Schuler, who recently just completed her fourth season at the helm of Northeastern University, will become a Bulldog assistant, filling the coaching vacancy left by rookie assistant coach Julie Chu, who resigned last week to join Team USA as it centralizes ahead of the 2010 Olympics.

"Laura is a fantastic addition to our coaching staff, coming with NCAA college coaching and playing experience," said UMD head coach Shannon Miller. "Laura brings experience from the international stage where she competed at the World Championships and the Olympic games. I always appreciated her work ethic and loyalty when she played for me on Team Canada and I very much look forward to working with her as a coach."

Schuler, a native of Scarborough, Ontario, spent four seasons with the Huskies, including a 7-24-3 mark last season with a young Northeastern squad. Prior to landing back at her alma mater Northeastern, Schuler spent three years building a program at UMass Boston and was named the ECAC East Coach of the Year after leading the Beacons to a 13-12-1 record and an ECAC semifinal appearanace in 2003-04. Here you go!

No stranger to the international ice sheet, Schuler spent 11 seasons suiting up for the Canadian national team. She helped Miller claim a silver medal for Canada in 1998 in the first-ever Olympic women's ice hockey competition in Nagano, Japan. During her tenure with Team Canada as a player, she also won World Championship titles in 1990, 1992 and 1997.

A recent induction into the Northeastern University Hall of Fame (2004) for her achievements in the sport of hockey, Schuler helped the Huskies to a 74-24-5 record in four seasons, including four playoff berth. Over her collegiate career, she netted 64 goals and dished 57 assists for a total of 121 points.

"I am just so excited for this opportunity to learn first hand what Shannon does to be so successful," said Schuler. "I am thrilled to be working with such high performance athletes from all over the world that want to be the best day-in and day-out. I was like that as a player and want that as a coach."

Schuler graduated in 1994 from Northeastern after earning a bachelor's degree in Cadiovasular Health and Exercise. She will start her official duties as a Bulldog assistant coach on May 26th.
