MADISON, WI - The Western Collegiate Hockey Association today (June 25) announced the recipients of the league's annual Post-Graduate Scholarship Program for 2007-08. The men's winner is Nate Raduns of St. Cloud State University and the women's winner is Denelle Maguet, also of St. Cloud State University.
"The WCHA is tremendously excited and proud to announce the latest men's and women's Post-Graduate Scholarship winners," said Commissioner Bruce M. McLeod and Associate Commissioner Sara R. Martin in a joint statement. "Nate Raduns and Denelle Maguet represent the very best of collegiate athletics and we are proud to have had them both playing hockey and earning their degrees in the WCHA. We wish them both all the best in their future endeavors and know that both of them will be very successful in whatever they choose to pursue."
An advocate of excellence both on and off the ice, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association orginally announced it's annual post-graduate scholarship program in April of 2003, effective beginning with the 2003-04 school year. The post-graduate scholarships are two grants of $10,000 each that are presented annually to a male and female student-athlete for post-graduate studies.
Raduns, a senior from Sauk Rapids, Minn., was a four-year member (2003-07) of the St. Cloud State men's hockey team. He carried an undergraduate GPA of 3.72 (on a 4.0 scale), earning his B.A. in May of 2007 with a major in Economics. He has been twice honored as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete (2006 & 2007), where conference-member student-athletes must have a GPA of at least 3.50, is a three-time member of the All-WCHA Academic Team, was named to the 2007 Lowe's All-Senior All-America Team, gained ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V At-Large honors in 2005 and 2007, is a member of St. Cloud State University's Dean's List, and won the team McDonald Award (top student-athlete) in both 2005 and 2006. In addition, he has been an avid reader to children at local libraries, has been a child advocate at a local battered women's shelter, and has been active with his hometown youth hockey association. Raduns has already been accepted into a Master's Program in Finance at SCSU and also has applications in to graduate programs at Cornell, Vanderbilt, Michigan and U-C Santa Barbara. Upon completion of a graduate degree, he hopes to work in corporate finance.
As a productive forward and a top-line penalty-killer for the Huskies, Raduns earned multiple varsity letters, playing in 143 collegiate games and producing 19 goals, 31 assists and 50 scoring points. He also helped his team to a 22-11-7 record and a second place finish in the WCHA in the most recent season of 2006-07, as well as to an appearance in the NCAA tournament.
"Nate Raduns is a truly classy young man who is an outstanding teammate to each and every player," said Huskies' men's head coach Bob Motzko. "He has every man's respect because they know his dedication to school work and his commitment to this program. He is exactly what is meant in describing an NCAA Student-Athlete. For four years, not many student-athletes have out-performed him in or on the classroom, weight room, practice field or game night. He has volunteered throughout the community in a host of areas during his SCSU career, and in my 21 years of coaching, I have not had a better student and athlete."
Nominated for the WCHA Post-Graduate Scholarship by St. Cloud State University Faculty Athletics Representative Bill Hudson, Raduns is the son of Paul and Bonnie Raduns.
Maguet, a senior at St. Cloud State from Ste. Rose, Manitoba, was a two-year varsity captain for the hockey Huskies and a three-year regular at forward. She carried a 3.90 GPA during her collegiate career, earning her B.S. degree this Spring, majoring in HR Management with a minor in Marketing. She is a two-time honoree as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, is a member of the WCHA All-Academic Team, and was a member of ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District 5 Second Team. She plans to attend the Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics graduate program at the University of Manitoba and hopes to work in the agricultural industry upon completion of her advanced degree.
Originally a transfer to SCSU in 2004 from the University of Findlay, which dropped it's hockey program, Maguet played in 105 collegiate games for the Huskies, producing 19 goals, 38 assists and 57 scoring points. In her senior season of 2006-07, she had 18 points in 36 games for SCSU's 12-18-7 club.
In addition to her outstanding work both in the classroom and on the ice, Maguet has regularly volunteered off-ice as well, packing food boxes at the Salvation Army, working at hockey camps at local elementary schools and helping in the reading programs for youth at local libraries.
"Denelle Maguet has been a two-year team captain for the Huskies and she is an outstanding student-athlete and top performer on our team," said Huskies' head coach Jeff Giesen. "She is a strong leader both vocally and by example, and she serves the community in a variety of roles and is always willing to go above the regular demands of our team to reach success.
"Denelle is of the highest of character and someone I would hope that my own daughter would follow as to how to do things as a student-athlete. Her leadership has helped establish a culture that will carry on for some time to come."
Nominated for the WCHA Post-Graduate Scholarship by St. Cloud State Faculty Athletics Representative Bill Hudson, Maguet is the daughter of Jean Louis and Rosanne Maguet.
The original announcement of the WCHA Post-Graduate Scholarship program, in 2003, was made jointly by P.J. Hill, then Chair of the Association and current Faculty Representative from University of Alaska Anchorage and Commissioner McLeod. In announcing the post-graduate scholarship program, Hill said, "This represents another positive step forward for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association in the area and recognition of academic achievement. We are extremely proud of the excellent reputation our member institutions have in both athletics and academics, and this new post-graduate scholarship program will only enhance that."
The first two winners of the WCHA's Post-Graduate Scholarship in 2003-04 were Mike Colgan of Colorado College and Michelle McAteer of University of Minnesota Duluth. The 2004-05 recipients of the WCHA's Post-Graduate Scholarship were Reid Goolsby of Colorado College and Emma Laaksonen of Ohio State University, the 2005-06 recipients were Jake Brandt of University of North Dakota and Kelsey Bills of University of Minnesota, and the 2006-07 recipients were Ted O'Leary of University of Denver and Meghan Mutrie of University of North Dakota.
